CHOIR Veteran Engagement in Research Group

Chair: Justeen Hyde, PhD

Co-Chair: Anna Barker, MS

CHOIR employs pathways to better incorporate Veteran perspectives into the various aspects of our research. By engaging Veterans in our Bedford and Boston communities, we hope to increase the significance, adoption, and dissemination of research discoveries to Veterans and those who serve them. The Veteran Engagement in Research Group (VERG) has formed a Stakeholder Council and a Veteran Consultant Network to ensure Veteran engagement across the research continuum. We are also developing Training and Education opportunities for Veterans consultants, stakeholders, and VA research teams.

 Stakeholder Council

Mission: To inform the CHOIR research agenda as a whole and to provide input into the direction of CHOIR research areas to ensure they are consistent with the Veteran community’s and Veteran Health Administration (VHA)’s ongoing needs and interests, and to provide input and feedback on CHOIR’s strategic priorities, map new directions for CHOIR research, and ensure that CHOIR research is both relevant and timely.

 Veteran Consultant  Network (VCN)

Mission: The VCN is an avenue for Veterans to participate actively in the planning, direction, conduct, and dissemination of research as consultant partners with Principal Investigators (PIs) and study teams on one or more research and/or Veteran engagement projects.

 Training and Education

VERG holds conferences and is developing training materials to ensure that CHOIR/Veteran research teams have the tools they need to work together following our engagement principles. Our September 2016 conference, “Engaging Veterans in Health Services Research: Learning from the Experts,” gathered researchers from across the country as well as Veterans and Veteran Service Organization (VSO) representatives for a full day of collaborative conversation.

In addition, CHOIR is playing a lead role at the national level in supporting Health Services Research and Development (HSR&D) goals of including Veterans and other stakeholders in the development and implementation of research, evaluation, and quality improvement studies.  Justeen Hyde, PhD is a co-Principal investigator on the Strengthening Excellence in Research through Veteran Engagement (SERVE) project (April 2017-present). SERVE's goals are to identify, describe, and disseminate best practices & tools to optimize & operationalize Veteran Engagement in all stages of the research process.
