Veteran Community Research Partnership
What is the Veteran Community Research Partnership (Vet-CoRP)? The Vet-CoRP, formed in 2016, is comprised of Veterans and Veteran-serving representatives who meet 4 times each year to contribute their expertise and provide CHOIR leadership and research teams with feedback on our strategic priorities and research agendas. Practical, actionable input from Veterans and those directly involved in their care help CHOIR work towards its mission of conducting meaningful, responsive, person-centered research that contributes to improving VA healthcare and the health and well-being of Veterans.
The Vet-CoRP will inform and contribute to advancing CHOIR’s three major research priorities for FY 2025-2029:
- Improvements in the use of virtual technologies to support Veterans’ connection to and engagement in health care.
- Expansion of approaches to providing whole health care to Veterans who face social and economic marginalization.
- Development and training of VA providers and Veterans to engage in shared decision-making conversations about precision oncology technologies.
When requested, Vet-CoRP members will also provide input on other bodies of research conducted by CHOIR research teams or collaborating partners.

CHOIR-Community Collaborative to Advance Research Equity (C2CARE)
What is C2CARE? The CHOIR-Community Collaborative to Advance Research Equity (C2CARE) was formed in 2023 to foster research collaboration between CHOIR investigators and community organizations dedicated to serving Black Veterans. The C2CARE collaborative highlights the importance of the expertise equally held by CHOIR investigators, community organizations, and Veterans.
C2CARE meets quarterly to address health issues prioritized by the Black Veterans in our community. The collaborative members connect CHOIR investigators and community members to form a foundation for future research partnerships and to identify potential funding mechanisms, and we provide guidance as these partnerships progress.
Our 2024 (first year) agenda included the following topics:
- Disparities in discharge status, with a focus on Other Than Honorable (OTH) discharges
- Using visual arts to increase cross-cultural understanding of the Black Veteran experience
- Black Veterans do not have a sense of inclusion at VA healthcare facilities
CHOIR research teams are now working in partnership with Veterans, related community organizations, and other interested parties to conduct research that helps to close the racial awareness and equity gap in these areas. We will continue to identify additional research priorities in 2025 and beyond.
